The Great Barbie Christmas
My favorite Christmas memory was created when I was four years old. I had recently discovered Barbie dolls and my sister, at eight years old, was a Barbie fanatic. Our age difference meant that we were rarely interested in the same toys at the same time, so our parents took full advantage of the opportunity to encourage us to play together. Hence The Great Barbie Christmas.
My sister, Val, and I were accustomed to homemade gifts from our parents such as doll clothes and dollhouse furniture, with a few big items like roller skates and baby dolls coming from Santa. This particular Christmas was different. I did get a soft, fuzzy teddy bear from mom and dad, but the majority of our gifts were related to Barbie.
We were raised in the seventies, so this meant that Barbie was wearing wedge shoes and velour jumpsuits. I imagine that walking down the Barbie aisle of Toys ‘R Us was probably more colorful and enjoyable than the slightly nauseating, bubblegum pink and hot purple experience it is today. Our Barbies wore a lot of earth tones and primary colors, shades that are much easier on the eyes.
Along with the Barbie dolls came their furniture, and that was where the fun began. Back then, the furniture was inflatable. Val and I had such fun blowing up the little chairs, end tables, coffee tables, and dining furniture. One thing that was noticeably missing was a house. As excited as we were, we were also typical young children and so we wondered, "Where is the Barbie Dream Home?"
Looking back, I'm embarrassed by my four-year-old self. Our parents didn't have a lot of money when they were raising us and as an adult and a parent I now understand how they must have struggled to afford those gifts. This was by far the most extravagant Christmas we'd ever had and it was not cheap. My lack of gratitude must have hit my mother especially hard since she grew up in poverty and was so excited to give us the things she could have only dreamed about as a child.
Mom took it with good grace and true Christmas spirit. Instead of letting on that we had hurt her, she cheerfully suggested that we go downstairs and set up a "house" on the hearth near the wood stove. We grudgingly agreed and spent the rest of Christmas morning happily creating living spaces for our Barbies.
I learned two things that Christmas. One was that without the restrictive play space that a Barbie Dream Home would have imposed, we were able to use our imaginations to create much grander homes for our dolls. The other thing I learned is that karma works quickly. About three hours after I had thrown my temper tantrum over the Barbie house, I got my tongue stuck the frame of our metal screened door. I spent the remainder of Christmas Day with ice cubes tied to my tongue with gauze.
