Shops And Shopping In Bremen
The less attractive modern steel and glass building on the east side of the market place is the Haus der Biirgerschaft, the state parliament. The Uberseehotel, favored by business travellers, is on Wachtstrasse, just south of the Marktplatz..

Bottcherstrass Bremen
Bottcherstrasse, one block to the south and west, is a narrow medieval street that has been a noted arts and crafts center since the 1920s. Its late patron, Ludwig Roselius, made his fortune in coffee. You can see his collection of medieval art in the 16th century Roseliushaus, at Bottcherstrasse 6. The Paula Modersohn Becker Haus, at Bottcherstrasse 810, was named after one of the founders of the Worpswede art colony and features many of her works. Workshops and stores of goldsmiths, silversmiths, and other artisans and craftspeople occupy many of the street's interesting nooks and crannies.
A carillon of Meissen porcelain bells, perched high up next to the Roselius house, chimes at noon, 3:00 P.M., and 6:00 P.M. Beer glasses clink all day long at the Spitzen Gebel, a tavern behind the Schlitting with a genuine Old Bremen atmosphere. The pedestrian tunnel at the southern end of Bottcherstrasse brings you to the Martini Anleger (river piers) for 75 minute harbor boat trips. Boats depart daily, March through October, at 10:00 A.M., 11:30 A.M., and 3:15 P.M., with a 4:40 P.M. departure subject to demand. Evening riverboat parties on the Weser are run every first and third Saturday, April-October, leaving the piers at 7:15 P.M. for a run downstream, with an ice cold schnapps as a welcome aboard Aperitiv before a generous cold buffet.
Book well in advance, if possible, through the tourist information office. Bremen's Kajenmarkt, a lively flea market featuring a fish auction, arts and crafts, a market crier, and live music, is held next to the piers every Saturday from 8:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M.
The Schnoor District and Nightlife Across Balgebrlickstrasse, a block south of the cathedral, is the charming Schnoor district, on the river at the southeastern end of the Altstadt. Bremen's oldest, stillintact residential quarter of 15th to 18thcentury dollhouses on narrow streets and alleys, the Schnoor is packed with cozy inns, coffee shops and restaurants, artsandcrafts workshops, antiques stores, boutiques, and galleries.
Night owls are well catered to in Bremen by a multitude of pubs (several of them offering jazz) and discos. Bremen's oldest in disco, the Lila Eule (Lilac Owl), is at Bernhardstrasse 10. Schickeria (the chic crowd) restaurants include the Topaz, Violenstrasse 13, and Jan Tabak, Weserstrasse 93.
