Thyroid Disorders 101
The thyroid is one of the largest and most important of the endocrine glands in the body. Part of the endocrine system, the thyroid is responsible for producing hormones which are necessary for the regulation of metabolism and growth, and other bodily functions. The thyroid gland is found in the neck. If it malfunctions, aside from medical treatments, are there alternative treatments for thyroid disorders?

· The thyroid has control functions
The thyroid produces the hormones necessary for control of many functions in the body. Known as thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), these hormones regulate the rate of metabolism and affect the growth and rate of function of many other systems in the body.
· The thyroid can malfunction in two ways
There are two known ways in which the thyroid malfunctions: over activity and under activity. With respect to the first one, there is an excess in production of the hormones. Inversely, the lack or minimal production of thyroxine is called hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid). The low production of the hormones causes muscle hypotonia, depression, cramps, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Goitre.
