Discovering Indian Railways

The Indian Railway System is second largest railway system of the world, there are more than 62,300 km of track which are laid down between 7,000 stations. The Indian railway takes its passengers to their respective places.
History of Indian Railways
the Indian railways was laid down by the British. It was in the year 1853 that the first train ran on the Indian tracks. This was a train with 14 carriages and there were around 400 guests, this train left from Bori Bunder for Thane (Bombay), a salute of 21-guns was given on this occasion. The 3 locomotives namely Sindh, Sahib and Sultan hauled it. The journey was completed in an hour and fifteen minutes. This is the first known commercial passenger service which was given in India. In fact, Thomason, a steam loco, was being used for hauling construction material in Roorkee.
Falkland was the second locomotive which came to India. This was taken into use by the contractors of GIPR for performing their shunting operations. This was later known as GIPR loco #9. The third locomotive which came to India was Vulcan, is said that this locomotive was utilized by the GIPR for shunting and material hauling.
In the year 1853 the first passenger train started from Howrah station and left for Hooghly, which is at a distance of 24 miles. The inauguration of railway transport thus began from here on the Eastern side of the country.
In the year 1856 the first line was opened by the Madras Railway Company. This line ran between Walajah Road and Veyasarpandy, this is at a distance of 63 miles. The year 1959 marked the beginning of railways in the Northern part of the country. The first line was laid between Allahabad to Kanpur which was 119 miles in length. In 1857 the first part from Hathras Road to Mathura Cantonment was opened. These were certain steps to develop the railway network in India.
