The Loving Cup
The Melbourne Cup prize is by many known to be the Loving Cup due to its 'loving cup' design. Valued an estimated $125,000 this 18-carat gold cup prize is the prestigious award jockeys ride their horses to full pelt at each year's Melbourne Cup. With the Loving Cup come accolades in the sporting world and the respect of the world who watches on in awe as the winning horse crosses the finish line at Flemington.
What is the meaning of the Melbourne Cup prize?
The meaning of the Melbourne Cup prize is to award a cup prize that is rooted in the history of our evolving nation as well as speaking of the prestige honour awarded with the Loving Cup.
The idea of designing the current cup came from a range of cup prizes that have evolved ever since the first Melbourne Cup was raced in 1861. Back then it was a hand-beaten gold watch that was up fro grabs and won by Archer, followed by a large range of prizes until in 2001 the trophy ended up being an 18-carat gold Loving Cup design made from 34 pieces of gold metal which are hand-beaten for over 200 hours.
How the Cup prize got its name Loving Cup:
Thanks to its design and the fashion of its creation the Loving Cup was born. In traditional sporting trophy designs the loving cup trophy is usually a common made in the shape of a cup situated on a pedestal, with two or more handles. Loving cup trophies are made from silver or silver plate.
But because of the high prestige of the Melbourne Cup, its prize is more than that. On closer inspection of the Loving Cup you can see small hammer imprints. It contains 1.65 kg of 18-carat gold valued at $125,000.
Notable Melbourne Cup trophy trivia:
The winning trainer and jockey of the Cup receive a miniature replica of the Loving Cup. This is a practice first used in 1973. A Tommy Woodcock trophy (handler of famous horse Phar Lap is also awarded to the strapper.
During the Second World War years (from 1942 to 1944) the winning owner of the Melbourne Cup actually received war bonds at the value of 200 pounds.
Each year a new trophy is being made and the winning owner takes ownership of it. If two horse tie, a second cup is being offered.
What many people don't know is that event organisers took a Cup replica to far away locations such as the US, the UK, the Middle East and New Zealand to raise further interest in the Melbourne Cup race.
