Golf Ball Manufacture - How Golf Balls Are Made
If you are looking to buy some new golf balls you may want to read up a little on how they are made. That’s exactly what this article will give you, and hopefully by the time you are through reading this you will know exactly what variety to buy. Did you know that only wooden balls were used when the game was first played? Well, I hope that’s got you interested in reading a little more.
The wood variety was around for over a century before someone decided to use a feathered variety. It then saw a change to the gutta variety before it turned to rubber! After all these evolutions it changed to what we know as a golf ball today.
In order to get a good idea of how a golf ball would behave we need to get a clear picture of what lies beneath. Well, a golf ball can be divided into the covering layer, the inner layers and then the core right at the interior. You can get two varieties of balls, ones that are made to spin and ones that are made to cover distance.
As the name suggests, the spin variety is manufactured so that it tends to spin more during flight. This variety generally consists of three piece balls that are of the wound type. Some of them are made using a liquid core center. The solid type core consists of a miniature hard rubber sphere. These are, as one can well imagine an expensive variety of the golf ball and used on special occasions when you need to spin the ball.
A distance ball on the other hand is usually made up of two pieces. The solid core ensures a harder feel to the ball. They are extremely popular with average level and beginner players, and are not as expensive as the spin type. Then there are the single piece synthetic varieties that are mostly used for practicing.
The particular brand and variety of golf balls that you use is purely a question of your personal style and taste. What works great for one may not work well at all for another player. There have been so many innovations over the years in the construction of golf balls, which the modern ball is nothing like what the beginners of the game used a few hundred years ago. The new four piece variety is supposed to travel further than any other kind, but it is still early to comment on those.
