A Keychain By Any Other Name
What’s in a name, thus questioned the famed classical bard of England in one of his well-loved plays. A rose by any other name would still smell sweet, he enthuses. What’s a keychain then, you ask. A keychain is a miniature chain, more often than not made of metal or plastic, which connects an equally small item to a key ring. That is, of course, a technical definition by that great poundage of information that is Webster.
A key chain’s length will allow a particular article to be utilized easier than if connected directly to a key ring. And just as there are different styles, there are also different variations of key chains. Some can let you rotate one or both ends of the key chain, thus preventing it from being twisted. Others can simply serve as links to connect a key ring to the belt of the person using the key chain.
Some of the more common individuals who use key chains are those whose jobs obviously require them to use keys more often in their everyday routine of work. These include security guards, prison officers, janitors, and perhaps store owners or retail business managers. Normally, these persons use key chains in such a way that the keys remain fastened onto their belts, thus avoiding accidental loss or even worse, being stolen by some pickpockets.
When the fad of using key chains started, one of its early uses was to promote a certain business or product brand. A regular key chain will bear the name, the business address, the logo, and other information pertaining to the business being promoted. One can recall that the earliest designs of these key chains were in the form of number “1†shapes to connote that that business is a leader in its industry and that it promotes quality products. Other more common shapes at the time were house-like key chains, square and even rectangle designs.
When the manufacturing of key chains was further developed in the 1950s and 1960s, the key chain as a promotional item became even more unique. Plain designs turned into three-dimensional key chains that allowed businesses to put in other additional information pertinent to the product being endorsed as a less expensive yet standard key chain.
For multi-national companies, key chains were given out in millions to their valued customers owing to their affordability and uniqueness. For instance, if a production company is about to launch a new movie or a new television show, it partners with a food company to provide a film character key chain that a buyer can get out of every cereal box bought.
