What the heck is a parts kit?
I bought myself an AK47 a little while ago. Its a preban, Romanian, which came with 2x 30 rnd mags, 100 rnds of ammo, lifetime warranty yadda yadda yadda for $400. Then a couple months later, i saw in ad in a magazine for a parts kit with the same gun for about $200 (less receiver). Did i just get hosed with my deal or what? What is a parts kit? Does the parts kit mean that i have to go buy a receiver and put it together or is it just what the title says and is just spare parts for my gun? Also, lets say i find a parts kit of an ex-fullauto gun; if i find a receiver for it and put it back together, does that mean that i violated federal law by "manufacturing" a full auto weapon past the 1986 ban? Can anyone clarify all of this or at least part? I feel like i got gipped. Thanks so much.
No, you didn't get "hosed". 
By Federal law, a receiver is a firearm. The "parts kit" you saw is everything but a receiver, and is therefore not a firearm. If you bought a parts kit with the intention of building a complete weapon, you would then pay even more than that for a receiver.
A parts kit can be sold without a firarms license, and ca be sent through the mail, since it is not considered a firearm. There are all sorts of little lopholes like that in the firarms laws that make it beneficial for a person to either buy or sell a parts kit. And if you had a receiver, it is already a firearm, so assembling it with a parts kit is legal.
