The Latest Wireless Internet Innovations In Las Vegas And Portland
The west coast is often thought of as a trendsetter, as the place where everything from fashion to slang originates in the States before it moves across the country--or gets carried on a redeye flight straight to New York City. And there's nowhere that is more connected to technology than the state of California, home of Google's offices, Silicon Valley, and countless new Internet 2.0 startups, all of whom hope to change the game and make millions.
So it's no surprise that many cities in the southwest and on the west coast are starting to roll out truly innovative new forms of wireless internet, which are designed to do a whole lot more than just make it simple to check one's email from a coffee place before heading off to work or class. This new form of wireless is a big deal because it actually provides coverage over a wide area. In fact, it would be possible to travel all the way from Las Vegas to Portland and back without ever having to remember a password or type anything in to locate a network. That's a pretty huge step forward.
To truly understand how this new form of wireless works, it is first important to look back at the past of the internet. In the beginning, everyone was chained to a desk with a most unfortunate connection speed, because the internet could only be accessed through a dial-up connection. This meant that your modem used your regular phone line to send and receive data, and it meant that data moved very, very slowly.
After dial-up, the next step was broadband and cable, which used ethernet cables to ensure that data could move faster. This was why it was suddenly possible to do things like actually send and receive mp3s and images without waiting hours for them to download. Broadband is also the basis speed for most wireless internet connections, with people simply buying routers that make it possible for those with wireless-enabled computers to receive the signal and get onto a network. This is great in your own home, if you're close to the router, but can be a mess out in the world. After all, wireless networks often don't provide solid coverage for more than a few paces, and when more than one person is on one, the speed suffers considerably.
With WiMax, the network in question is one that is operating via towers, so the signal is able to spread for miles. If there's another tower within 30 miles, then the signal can actually be bounced, extending even further. The companies interested in this technology are installing towers everywhere in the country, with the goal of beating the cable and phone companies to a truly national wireless network. This means that for people who already are on board, it is possible to get online from anywhere just as easy as it is to turn on your cell phone and make a call, even if you're on the other coast.
Right now, the west coast is a major hub for early WiMax adopters, as cities from Seattle to Las Vegas are getting on board quickly. This means that, just like always, the west coast is on the cutting edge of a great new technology that is going to change the way that people experience the internet.
