Post War Austin 12
A British car is a sturdy car, and this is proved this week by the discovery of an Austin 12/4, manufactured in 1929, that started first time. After festering in the garage for nearly half a century, the current owner, Roger Bulled, decided to have a look at the wreck and decide what to do with it, assuming it would have seized up. The eighty one year old vehicle was bought brand new by his father, a careful driver, and it has not moved since his dad Leslie died. It was assumed that after being abandoned for so long, the car would be in disarray, especially as it is a rare fabric bodied model.
Roger, a retired citizen of Metheringham, Lincolnshire was surprised to find that the old car started, after sitting untouched for such a long time
‘I pumped up the tyres and they stayed up,' Mr Bulled said. ‘The rubber is cracked but the inner tubes are obviously still intact, which is remarkable really. ‘And the engine turned over when we tried it with the starter handle, but I didn't try to start her up in case I did any damage but I'm sure it would go. ‘I've never seen another fabric bodied saloon, even in a museum.'
Leslie, a man who kept his affairs in perfect order, had kept the original Austin 12 handbook along with a photograph showing the car in the prime of its life. Built in Birmingham's Longbridge factory, it is now accompanied by the driving licence of the owner who loved it for so many years. Leslie passed away at the ripe old age of 95, and only gave up driving the year before he died.
Mr Bulled explained: ‘My grandparents bought it in 1929 for my father to drive them around in. We lived in Barnet in North London, and used to go on holiday to Cornwall or Devon.' We used to set off very early in the morning, so I used to sleep on the floor in the back, there was no transmission tube so it was flat, and my sister laid on the back seat.' It had none of the safety features you get today, there was no seatbelts and it wasn't a high performance car.' I was taken off the road in 1961, that's the last time it was taxed and it's never had an MOT.'
The car will now be bid for at auction, but will be very hard to get Car Insurance Quotes for, due to its age and rarity.
