Progressive Revelation Is Still Progressing
It's right there in black and white or maybe even red on white depending upon which Bible translation you are using. Jesus says in John 16:12 that there is so much more to say to us but He simply can't give us the whole enchilada because of the state of consciousness we were in 2,000 years ago. So, how about NOW? Can we get another deposit of illumination- revelation?
What helped me to work with the Bible contradictions or apparent inconsistencies was the principle of progression. It's right there if one cares to see it. The Old Testament comes from the understandings and consciousness of those who lived at that time. For Moses to get through to the people (for however much he wrote of the Pentateuch) he had to address them on their lower level of consciousness.
Moses had to threat the people as we would our young children.
Do this! Don't do that! Here are the RULES, now follow them precisely or you will get a spanking or time out.
Some 2,000 years later Jesus arrives on the scene and the consciousness level of the people has increased. They can take a little more wisdom, some deeper teaching, and further illumination. So Jesus says "You've heard it said, but let me say unto you" (five times in Matthew 5). Jesus told them of a deeper commitment to life, the spirit, and God. But, he also said, there's more on the way, I simply can't give you now what you're not ready for.
Well, it's 2,000 years later. The earth is not flat! The earth isn't the center of the universe. We're moving from electrons to photons, from Euclidian geometry to fractal geometry, and so on. And yet there are some who don't want anything NEW. There are some who want to stay with only those words, those principles, and the consciousness of the sixty six books that were written long, long ago.
Paul called that lower consciousness the "carnal mind".
We cannot occupy two states of consciousness at the same time. Jesus changed and overthrew many of the Old Testament customs and principles or at least took them to a deeper level. Why isn't that possible now? Why can't we allow the Holy Spirit, the Christ consciousness to make changes, over throw 2,000 year old ideas, and go deeper?
All mankind possesses a "conditioned consciousness" as compared to God's "unconditioned consciousness". We've been tainted not only by the very slow crawl of societal and civilization creep, but we've been geographically, culturally, denominationally, and spiritually conditioned to believe what we do. It's time to move ON!
Progressive revelation is still progressing and so should we!
