If the RMS Titanic had been made with today's technoligy would it have sunk?
I'm wondering if the RMS Titanic that sank on April 14-15th 1912, had been made with todays technoligy and todays ship rules but it was exactly the same size if it would have sunk.
Please don't just say "yes" If it wouldn't have sunk give me a scientific explanation as to why it wouldn't have sunk. Thank you.
There are a few key points to that, though I WOULD suggest you actually do some research. =1 For one, I'd like to say that the Titanic WAS compartmentalized; actually, one of the first - it was somewhat rudimentary in comparison with today's ship technology, but the reason why it was, then, called (ironically) The "Unsinkable Ship" was because, should they spring a leak somehow, there were watertight sealing doors in different parts of the ship, that could be closed in order to prevent it from taking on too much water and becoming too heavy to stay afloat. THe problem with what happened, was that the ship got such a huge hole, in such an important area (near the boiler room, I THINK) that it took on water too fast to close the doors in time - ergo, it sank. Now, like your first answerer stated, modern-day sonar and satellite imaging would have helped out greatly in avoiding that pesky iceberg, 0.o but it was an enormous ship - it is POSSIBLE, though not certain, that it may have been moving too fast, with too much momentum (it was moving much faster as the captain wanted to arrive ahead of schedule. Stupid captain.) that it could have sunk anyway, with not enough time to slow it down and change direction. THere are two possibilities branching off of the assumption that it didn't miss the iceberg, and now it's taking on water: it could have a relatively small hole, and escape with enough time to close the big heavy watertight doors, or it could still have a massive hole and take on too much water to close the doors in time and sink. Another point is that the captain WAS in fact aware of the icebergs in the Atlantic, at that time, but figured that they would hit any, so went right along in at full-speed-ahead into the iceberg - this alone could have lead to the ship's destruction, modern
day or not. SO, now that I've practically written this silly thing for you, I'd like to say that you do need more information for your essay, and please do some actual research, as I'm sure you are. RIGHT? XD =) Hope I helped!
