Geothermal Heat Pump Open Loop Scaling Issue
One of the largest concerns people have with open loop systems is the potential for scale build up on the earth loop coil.
This is a somewhat valid concern but it seems to have more worry associated with it than is is warranted. The fact is there are thousands and thousands of open source systems all over the U.S and Canada that have operated for decades on hard water.
There are a few things to understand here.
First off, heat pumps that are going to be put into service into open source systems have cupro nickel heat exchangers. This material is resistant to the formation of scale. The second thing is that the temperature of the water going through the coil will be only a few degrees different than the aquifer temperature. (Hotter water during cooling, colder water during heating) At these low temperatures the scale causing elements in the water stay in the water. And lastly if after extended use there is a drop in the conductivity across the earth loop coil it can be flushed out with a boiler de-scaler solution to remove the scale.
Notice that I said "boiler de-scaler" indicating that scale issues are not exclusive to ground source heat pumps. Nobody seems to have the same level of worry about the notion that boilers scale up on a level that arguably exceeds that of open source GSHP's. Many boilers have so much scale that their operational efficiency has been reduced by more than 20% of when they were new.
The most likely thing to have significant scale on a GSHP is the de-superheater coil. (if it has one) The de-super heater is a domestic water assist component that is offered with many heat pumps. The water that is going through this coil is the same fresh water that is in the earth loop coil but unlike the earth loop coil this water is very hot, up to about 140 degrees. If a water softening system is on the domestic water this will greatly reduce the scaling of the de-superheater.
It would not be economical to soften or treat the water that is flowing through the earth loop coil of an open loop system. There is too much of it and for the reasons stated above it is not necessary. If scaling is too much of a concern then just install a closed loop system.
I am not personally aware of any systems that had a level of scale buildup on the earth loop coil that resulted in an non-operational system. I have heard of units needing to be flushed every few years.
If anyone reading this can provide me with examples of open loop systems quickly failing due to scale build up please let me know. These articles and this website are intended to get at the reality of the topics and promote good information for the betterment and advancement of the industry. I'll happily correct things I am shown to be wrong about. It wouldn't be the first time.
