On getting a herpes blood test
A couple of weeks ago, you had unprotected sex with a guy and then you completely forgot about it. You've been living quite the same after the incident. After some time, you noticed one or more blisters on your genitals and on your rectum. You decide to ignore it. And then the blisters break, turning into painful ulcers. You finally had enough and decide to take a herpes blood test.
Genital herpes is actually common in certain countries such as the United States of America (USA). According to statistics, roughly 16.4% of the country's population is suffering from genital herpes. Genital herpes is caused by the Herpes Simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). Although the Herpes Simplex virus type I (HSV-1) can also cause genital herpes, it usually causes blisters in the oral region.
A lot of people undergo the dreaded herpes blood test for several reasons. The most common is they are already experiencing symptoms. For those who do not manifest the signs and symptoms of genital herpes, undergoing a test is the best form of prevention that they can take for early treatment and for the case of prevention.
Laboratory tests done for herpes are categorized into two types: through sensitivity and specificity. When you want something that has both then a herpes blood test is the perfect way to go. That said, this test is more specific and sensitive compared to other herpes tests.
A herpes blood test work by gauging the number of antibodies present in your body to the said disease. This test is usually done when there are no visible symptoms and that the person only wants to verify if they are positive of the said disease. Hypothetically speaking, when antibodies are present in the body then it can be concluded that the herpes virus is latent in the body.
Typically, antibodies are created by the body on an average of two to three months after infection. There are certain tests that detect antibodies ahead of time. The fact is, when antibodies are detected in the body, they exist there forever.
The catch in herpes blood tests is that they cannot differentiate between HSV-1 and HSV-2. If a person wants to determine the virus causing their symptoms then they need to undergo a type-specific blood test.
Genital herpes can be prevented if a person knows how to practice being safe, in and out of the bedroom.
