What are the different tam-tam (gong) playing techniques and how do you notate them?
Hi, for my university degree I have to write a solo percussion piece, and I was considering writing for tam-tam, the type of gong used most widely in western music. There are some amazing videos on youtube of people playing them, and I have noticed that sometimes they play them in different parts of the gong itself, as well as moving the beater along the surface of the gong rather than striking it which creates a strange harmonic effect. I was wondering if anyone could explain these techniques in more detail to me, and also if anyone knows how to score for a gong that will be doing more than just simple occasional hits? Thanks
In my experience I haven't seen a standardized way of notating for the tam-tam.
Generally, just a note (on a seemingly random) pitch, with text next to it describing the type of mallet, or implement to be used.
I have seen for coin rubs, or lexan mallet rubs, it to be notated with a glissando mark above the note. But the note value is accurate to how long the scratch should last.
