Can Anyone Help My Fat Dog?
So as the question implies, does anyone have any advice for healthy dog weight loss? If you have website or book sources or you're a vet or an animal geek, I'm listening.
I guess I should talk about Wilson. He's a four-going-on-five-year-old miniature poodle who is ten pounds overweight. He has labored breathing and he's noticeably thick.
My dad always gives him so much crap. Doggie treats and table food alike. My mom and sisters and I have tried to tell him to stop, but he's the "man" and "his women" won't order him around. Is there an alternative snack I could buy instead?
Also, Wilson hates exercise. Is there a work-out plan for fat doggies that don't play?
Sorry this was so long, but I appreciate you reading it all the way through!
Cindy
The first thing I'd suggest is to cut out the treats and table food. It sounds harsh, but it will really help. Then I'd look at introducing vegetables into your dogs diet. You can also buy weight reduction diets for your pooch. Check our your local pet supply store to see what they have.
In regards to exercise for your dog....it's always difficult to drop the weight on a dog that doesn't like to play. What I'd suggest is walking or swimming. Even a dog that doesn't like to play can walk. If you have a pool at home then get in with your dog and make your dog swim to you. If your dog isn't good at swimming then support your dog gently in the water while it paddles.
It's important to remember, particularly because your dog already has laboured breathing, that any exercise regime should be started slowly. Start with 5 or 10 minutes once or twice a day and as your dogs health improves the duration of the exercise can be increased.
I'd also consult with and work closely with your vet. Have regular check ups, including weigh in's. Your vet can follow the progress of your dog, listen to his chest, keep track of the observations you make while you're exercising with him and advise you of any additional or different measures you might be able to take.
I hope this is helpful. Good luck!
