Model railway trains are very popular. Although some people think of these miniatures as toys, they are really much more than a plaything. When you look more closely at the train itself, you realize the careful attention to detail and function that the manufacturer put into each piece. People who pursue this hobby can enjoy and entertain themselves and their families in ways that bring back the good feelings of childhood.

Did you consider becoming a train engineer when you were young? That career, along with becoming a cowboy or cowgirl, may have been a childhood dream. But, as you grew up, you got involved in other areas and ended up in a very different job as an adult. What model railway trains bring you is the chance to recapture the positive feelings of living in the railroad world, even if it is a miniature, but a place where you can control what happens, when it happens, and how it happens.

One of the most interesting things about model trains is that they can take on virtually any theme, virtually any type of scenery, and you can choose your control scheme freely. If you wish, your train could run on batteries, electricity, or even steam if you so desire. Keep in mind that steam is a bit more expensive, but you will pay the price for any type of power source you choose.

There are several different train sizes that you might choose, and they range from the N scale to the G scale. The G scale is not widely used, but for those who have the room it is a wonderful addition to an attic or garden. The N scale is small enough to be used virtually anywhere even though it does not work well with DCC. It will work, but you need an expert to perform the board installation if you want to get anywhere.

You can get track pieces in curves, straight, and flexible forms. Flexible track pieces give you the advantage of being able to navigate in Your Layout through and around scenery that you otherwise would have to move to deal with a track piece that otherwise has to go through the area in a specific way. With the flexible track, you can leave the scenery in place, e.g., a body of water, and bend the track around it.

Benchwork is a key aspect of model train planning. If you get the benchwork right, you have a fantastic model train railroad. But if you get the benchwork wrong, it can be at best annoying and even disastrous for your hobby layout. Make sure that you select benchwork that you can disassemble easily. Keep in mind that you might want to take your trains to shows or move them around later on.

So, make your benchwork overly permanent and you will not be able to take it to other locations. This is only a problem if it becomes something you want or need to do. If you believe that you are likely to stay put and not want to take your model railway train to another location in the foreseeable future, you can make your decisions accordingly. But, in general, choose benchwork, with scenery and accessories that suit the ways you might want to use or move your trains down the road.
