I have just bought a 4-7 mth old ringneck?
I am curious how I can tell if its male or female, even if it's not for a while. I also would like to know if anyone's got any tips for me on how to tame & train "Smokey" as I want to be able to let it out of the cage but be able to put it back in without losing a finger.
I have a huge flock of birds...I breed along with a friend of mine and take in rescues. When our IRN's are young (before 18-36 months old) we have to get them sexed to find out what they are to set them up to breed. If you have a male, he may "ring out" (gain the rings on his neck) between 18 to 36 months. You will not be able to visually tell before then. Juvenile males and hens all look the same.
IRN's are very hard to handtame if they are over 7 or 8 weeks and have not been handled. It is not impossible, but it will take time and lot's of patience. Do not get fustrated. Do not let your bird intimidate you. Spend lots of time near the cage and talking to it and letting it get used to you. Hand it small treats and don't attempt to touch it. You will have to work up trust, and that may take some time. Once your bird trusts that you are not going to hurt it, and it is used to spending time around you...then you can work on training it. Patience is the key to taming a wild acting bird. Clipping the wings and keeping them clipped helps big time with the process. If a bird can fly from you, it can get away and not have to listen to you. If it can't fly from you, he has to depend on you. IRN's are not cuddly affectionate birds, you will never have a snuggle bunny. They are extremely smart, active, inquisitive birds.
