There are a large number of train sets to choose from, making a decision can be rather daunting for the buyer.
In selecting a model train you will often hear the idea of "scale." This term identifies model train size, in relation to the actual thing. As an example, a locomotive scale of 1:22.5 is 22.5 times smaller than the size of a full size locomotive. These scales are of enormous support when choosing a model train to ensure the right size is purchased.
There are numerous scales used in model trains and generally mainly composed of: Z scale, N scale, HO scale, O scale and G scale model trains.
Z scale (1:220) trains are a good option for hobbyists with not a lot of space. These trains are considerably small in proportions yet are highly detailed.
N scale (1:160) trains are one more very popular scale and the second smallest after Z scale. These trains are ideal for train collectors who want to run long trains. One major draw back with this particular scale is that the equipment is a little more expensive than HO scale. Bachmann and Atlas are respected brands that make N scale train sets.
HO (1:87) scale trains, are an extremely popular scale with regard to train sets. HO trains are typically highly detailed and are excellent value for money. An HO layout needs a comparatively large amount of floor space. Brands that incorporate this particular scale include Fleishmann, Lima, Marklin and Bachmann.
O (1:48) scale trains mostly revolve around toy trains which can easily be played with by children. They are not highly detailed and also for this particular reason may not appeal to collectors.
G (1:22.5) scale trains are rather restrictive as they are significantly larger than other sets in most cases for indoor use only, though the scale may suit some collectors. Bachmann is the most popular producer for train sets in this size.
